Typical scenario

An MFP proposed for write-off for ADF-only streaks

If a vertical streak appears on feeder copies but not file printouts, writing off the whole MFP needs examination. Different imaging paths can produce similar marks. Preserve example pages and the original condition of the narrow ADF glass before replacing the scanner assembly.

What needs to be clarified

Locate the streak between printing and scanning paths, check glass condition and determine justified maintenance or diagnostic work before assessing the whole machine as unserviceable.

Materials to prepare

  • MFP with asset identification and access to both scanner glasses
  • Same control original and initial copies, scans and printouts
  • Model instructions, fault record and previous cleaning information

What to compare

Compare internal test printing, flatbed and feeder scans using the same original and settings. Record streak position relative to feed direction. Inspect glass before permitted cleaning, then repeat the comparison. Associate remaining signs with a particular path; justify assembly replacement through separate diagnosis, rather than machine age.

Possible outcome of the analysis

Comparative test records and a defect list may separate removable contamination, confirmed faults and untested assemblies, supporting further maintenance or technical examination.

Limits of the conclusions

A vanished streak does not establish remaining component life. One mode cannot determine overall serviceability; the authorised party decides write-off using the confirmed condition.
